Parks closed due to high surf
The Maui News
North- and west-facing beach parks remain closed today as a precaution during the high-surf warning, the county announced Sunday.
Papalaua Wayside Park was closed on Sunday, and the county planned to keep the other parks closed until a safety assessment has been completed and park officials are confident there are no storm-related hazards, Parks and Recreation Director Karla Peters said.
West Maui parks from Papalaua to D.T. Fleming Beach Park were affected. Other parks subject to closure and safety assessments today include Baldwin, Hookipa, Lower Paia, Kanaha, Waihee and Waiehu beach parks.
Parks staff will inspect the beach parks for flooding, structural damage and other high-surf impacts.
The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning for the north-facing shores of Maui and north- and west-facing shores of Molokai through 6 p.m. today. Along the north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai, surf of 35 to 50 feet was expected Sunday, lowering to 25 to 35 feet today. Along west-facing shores of Molokai, surf of 25 to 35 feet was predicted through Sunday, lowering to 20 to 28 feet today.
