Lloyd Lee Loope, 74, of Makawao, passed away July 4 in his home. A celebration of his life is being planned for a later time. Lloyd was a conservation biologist for the U.S. Geologic Survey and worked at Haleakala National Park. His passion was for preserving Hawaii’s native ecosystems; he was determined to quell the threat of invasive species. By calling attention to quarantine issues at Kahului Airport, he raised statewide public awareness of this serious problem. During his career he also worked at Grand Teton National Park, Everglades National Park, and UNESCO in Paris. ...

James Raleigh Hill, 96, of Hilo and formerly of Kihei, Maui died July 2 at the Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Private services. Dodo Mortuary Hilo is assisting with arrangements. Mr. Hill was born on November 16, 1920 in French Lick, Indiana. He was a retired accountant and real estate broker. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Betty Francis Hill. Survived by son, Richard (Audrey) Hill of Hilo; daughter, Marian (Fred) Elliott of Santa Ana, California; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces & nephews.
