Access to Haleakala park districts remains limited

Sunrise reservation status still unclear

The Maui News

Haleakala National Park Summit and Kipahulu visitor centers remain closed due to the federal government shutdown, but roads and trails are accessible to the public, a park announcement said Monday.

The status of reservations to view the sunrise at the summit remained unclear — a park spokeswoman did not reply to a query Monday but a note on the park’s website indicated that cancellations were possible.

“The lapse in funding for the federal government may impact your reservation and travel plans,” the park said. “Be aware that if you have an existing reservation during this lapse of funding period, and the location is not staffed, your reservation may not be honored.

“We recommend that you do not make reservations for dates that fall within the lapse in funding time frame.”

Reservations are required at www.recreation.gov.

There will be no park entrance fee.

The shutdown began after midnight Friday and remained in place as of Monday night.

The Headquarters Visitor Center at the 7,000-foot level and the Haleakala Visitor Center at the 9,741-foot level overlooking the crater are closed. The Kipahulu Visitor Center in Oheo is closed as well.

Those with reservations for cabins in the crater “should make alternative plans,” a news release said. Cabin refunds may be requested via www.recreation.gov after federal operations resume.

No backcountry camping or cabin permits will be issued.

The Pools of `Ohe`o are closed, volunteer projects are canceled and website and social media will not be updated, the news release said.

Summit and Kipahulu roads and trail remain open, though with limited emergency response, the park said.

The Hosmer Grove and Kipahulu campgrounds are open.

Park officials have said that the park will stay as accessible as possible during the lapse of funding. Emergency medical response will be extremely limited. Electronic message boards, as well as signs posted on park buildings, will offer guidance to visitors.

Because park-specific road, weather and trail condition updates are unavailable, visitors may want to reference local news stations and forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=HIZ022 or www.ifa.hawaii.edu/haleakalanew/weather.shtml.

Starting at $4.62/week.
