A 59-year-old man was transported to the hospital after he was pulled from the ocean by beachgoers Monday morning in Wailea, a fire official said.

Wailea firefighters were dispatched to Poolenalena Beach in response to a 9:13 a.m. call, arriving to find the man being carried on a paddleboard and helped by other beachgoers, said Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro.

He said the man was barely conscious and coughing up water and had a laceration to his forehead.

Firefighters helped assess the patient, who was transported by medics to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
