The Maui News

A Wailuku man is facing enhanced charges of burglarizing a dwelling in a civil emergency after he was arrested Tuesday in the burglaries of three Wailuku residences, police said.

William Heintz, 37, was being held in lieu of $160,000 bail Wednesday at the Wailuku Police Station. He was charged with three counts of burglary of a dwelling in a civil emergency and habitual property crime.

Police said the investigation showed Heintz illegally entered two Wailuku residences on March 25 and stole property valued at about $700. The next day, he illegally entered another Wailuku residence and fled when he heard an alarm, police said.

Police located Heintz at about 6:30 p.m. Monday at a Wailuku residence. Search warrants executed by the police Crime Reduction Unit and Special Response Team resulted in the recovery of illegal drugs including heroin, crystal methamphetamine, marijuana and pills, police said.

Police also reported recovering stolen items.

The burglary of a dwelling, which normally carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, becomes a Class A felony carrying a penalty of up to 20 years in prison because the county is in a disaster emergency relief period, police said.

Those that take advantage during this unprecedented time will be charged accordingly,î police said in a news release.

Starting at $4.80/week.
