Bail was set at $58,000 for a man who shot himself in the hand after barricading himself in a building at Kaunoa Senior Center in Paia last week.

Nicholas Neely, 40, who gave no local address, is charged with first-degree burglary, attempted first-degree burglary, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, keeping a pistol or revolver in an improper place, first-degree reckless endangering, second-degree reckless endangering, keeping ammunition in an improper place and fourth-degree criminal property damage.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges when he was arraigned Tuesday in 2nd Circuit Court.

Police officers were sent to the senior center at 401 Alakapa Place at 2:17 a.m. Aug. 2 after police dispatch received several calls reporting multiple gunshots and a man shouting.

Neely was barricaded in a building at the complex and holding a semiautomatic pistol, police said.

A police negotiator talked with Neely for more than two hours before he shot himself in the hand, left the building and surrendered to police at 5:03 a.m., police said.

According to a complaint filed in court, Neely was armed with a 9 mm Glock replica ghost gun when he broke into the multipurpose room at the senior center and tried to break into the main building. Ghost guns are privately made and don’t have identifying marks.

If he is convicted of felony burglary or firearm offenses, Neely could face a mandatory minimum prison term, based on his prior convictions for second-degree robbery and first-degree burglary, according to the complaint.

A bail hearing was set Friday for Neely, who is being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center.

Starting at $4.62/week.
