Cottage fire causes $35,000 in damage

A fire caused about $35,000 in damage Monday afternoon to a cottage on Manini Place in Kihei, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Bystanders reportedly had doused the fire with water before firefighters arrived on scene in response to the 4:40 p.m. call. The fire was smoldering when the first fire crew arrived, and firefighters quickly extinguished any remaining fire, the Fire Department reported.

The fire was contained to one bedroom, with minor smoke damage to the rest of the 740-square-foot cottage, according to the Fire Department. Damage was estimated at $25,000 to the structure and $10,000 to its contents.

No injuries were reported.

The Fire Department reported that six residents were displaced by the fire.

The American Red Cross said a family of two adults and three children was temporarily displaced.

Red Cross volunteers met virtually with the affected residents and provided for their immediate needs, according to a news release from the organization.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, according to the Fire Department.
