Community Emergency Response Team to start meeting
The Maui News
Maui County’s Community Emergency Response Team, which is made up of volunteers who can pitch in during emergencies when professional responders aren’t available, will begin meeting regularly at 5:30 p.m. Monday and continue on the first work day of each month thereafter, the Maui Emergency Management Agency announced.
The virtual meetings take 30 minutes, including a 20-minute refresher course and 10 minutes for announcements. They are set for the same day as regularly scheduled monthly siren and emergency alert system tests conducted by the state.
“Regular meetings serve to keep our CERT volunteers engaged, promote situational awareness regarding possible threats and provide updated information to augment the emergency response skills of our volunteers,” said MEMA Administrator Herman Andaya. “As we saw in Hurricane Ian, CERT volunteers in Florida played an integral part in emergency response and served as a reminder of the need to keep our CERT volunteers in the County of Maui engaged and encourage them to maintain a high level of readiness.”
CERT volunteers and those interested in becoming volunteers are welcome and may register for meetings by emailing CERT@mauicounty.gov.
The county is still seeking volunteers. For more information, call (808) 270-7285, visit mauicounty.gov/emergency or email CERT@mauicounty.gov.
