Man lying in the roadway hit and killed in Kahului

Suspect still wanted by MPD

KAHULUI–On Monday morning at approximately 3:10 a.m. a motor vehicle collision occurred at Lono Avenue, 165 feet southeast of Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului, according to the Maui Police Department (MPD).

Preliminary investigation from the MPD has revealed that a 57-year-old male, known to frequent the Kahului area, was lying in the roadway when an unknown vehicle drove over him as it traveled southwest on Lono Avenue towards Kaahumanu Avenue. The unknown vehicle did not stop or render aid and fled the scene in an unknown direction.

As a result, the 57-year-old male succumbed to his injuries and passed away on the scene. According to the MPD, the victim’s identity is being withheld for 24 hours to allow his family an opportunity to notify their extended family and friends.

The involvement of speed, alcohol, or drugs has yet to be determined as the investigation remains ongoing.

At this time, Maui Police Department Vehicular Homicide Unit investigators are working diligently to identify the vehicle and operator that fled the scene.
