Plane overshoots runway at Kahului Airport, closes runway temporarily

KAHULUI – According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation a plane landing at the Kahului Airport Thursday in Maui overshot the runway and forced a temporary closure of one runway to incoming and outgoing flights. One larger aircraft arriving from the mainland was diverted to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.
Interisland flights were diverted to runway 5/23, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation who posted the notice of the temporary runway closure at the Kahului Airport on their Facebook page at 1:55 p.m.
At 2:34 p.m. the runway was reopened.
According to security at the Kahului Airport, the plane that overshot the runway was a Hawaiian Airlines Airbus.
The plane was an A321 that originated out of Seattle, according to a source for the Maui News.
It is unknown at this time if any injuries resulted in the incident.
