Man from Lahaina sufferers life-threatening injuries in wreck

A 35-year-old man from Lahaina suffered life-threatening injuries when he was riding on his motorcycle and the driver of an SUV made an illegal left turn onto the Honoapiilani Highway in front of him.

According to Maui police, the man was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in critical condition where he remains, and while the driver of the 2024 Chevy Suburban — a 37-year-old woman from Washington state — and her 41-year-old male passenger, also from Washington, were not hurt.

Police reported that after the collision, the driver of the Suburban was taken to the Wailuku Police Station and charged with first-degree negligent injury before being released pending the ongoing investigation.

According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of the Suburban was making an illegal left turn onto the Honoapiilani Highway from a parking area near 2580 Keakaa Drive when the man driving a 2017 KTM motorcycle was traveling south in the inner lane of highway. The motorcycle then collided with the Suburban.

The motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet, and the driver and passenger of the Suburban were both wearing their seatbelt. The vehicle’s airbags did not deploy.

According to police, the involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol is pending as the investigation remains ongoing.
