Public aerial fireworks displays are set for 11:59 p.m. Dec. 31 at Grand Wailea Resort and at the Four Seasons Resort in Lanai.
“The use of fireworks to celebrate the start of a new year is a privilege that Maui residents continue to enjoy. Unfortunately, this activity increases our community’s risk of fire and fire-related injuries,” the Maui Fire Department said in a news release while asking residents to follow proper safety procedures.
In terms of consumer fireworks, New Year’s Eve fireworks are on sale through 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, and a fireworks permit is not required for consumer fireworks such as sparklers, snakes and cylindrical or cone fountains that emit effects not higher than 12 feet off the ground.
However, a firecracker permit is required for the use of firecrackers and permits are available only at the designated locations. Each firecracker permit costs $25 and allows a purchase of up to 5,000 pieces of firecrackers.
Permits are available at eight locations on Maui, two locations on Lanai and two on Molokai including:
• Foodland Kaahumanu at 90 Kane St., Kahului.
