Alcohol appears to be a factor in hit-and-run death, police say
Maui police say speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the death of a 70-year-old man from Maalaea who was hit by a vehicle Monday night in Kihei.
Police have arrested a 42-year-old man from Wailuku who they believe was driving the vehicle.
According to police, the 70-year-old man was reportedly crossing East Lipoa Street at about 9:02 p.m. Monday when he was struck by a red pickup truck headed east. Police previously reported that the pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed when the man was hit.
As a result of the collision, the man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The driver of the red pickup allegedly fled the scene without stopping to check on the 70-year-old man or rendering aid.
Shortly after the collision, a citizen reported a red 2023 Toyota Tacoma operating recklessly on Maui Veterans Highway, leaving the Kihei area. Officers found the vehicle and arrested the 42-year-old Wailuku man, according to police.
