Maui police warn public of phishing scam

Maui police are warning the public about a phishing scam in which individuals are fraudulently using public information from County of Maui board agendas.

Police say scammers are contacting residents by phone, email or text while falsely claiming to represent the county or an affiliated board or department. In some cases, victims are told they owe fees, fines or other payments tied to agenda items or applications and are urged to send immediate payment.

The county does not request payment through wire transfers, cryptocurrency, payment apps, gift cards or similar methods.

Police are advising residents not to provide personal or financial information or send money in response to unsolicited messages. Rather, any payment requests should be verified by contacting the county or the appropriate department directly using official phone numbers or websites.

Anyone who believes they have shared personal information or sent money as part of the scam is urged to report it immediately to Maui police at (808) 244-6400.

Starting at $4.62/week.
