Malama Minn and Reina Miyamoto: A KAKOU effort to help Maui families take the first step toward homeownership
For many Maui residents, the dream of owning a home has long felt out of reach. Prices are high, inventory is limited, and the process itself can seem complicated or intimidating. The 2023 wildfires only deepened the uncertainty by destroying homes, displacing families and underscoring how fragile housing stability can be.
Despite these challenges, a powerful shift is taking place: education and collaboration are helping local families turn aspiration into action.
At the Realtors Association of Maui (RAM) and Hawaii HomeOwnership Center (HHOC), we have seen firsthand that knowledge changes everything. When people understand what it takes to buy and sustain a home — what programs exist, what credit really means, how to plan and save — ownership becomes not just possible but achievable.
That belief inspired the creation of KĀKOU, a new homeownership education initiative designed specifically for Maui County residents. The word kākou means “everyone,” reflecting our shared belief that housing opportunities should include the workers, families, and community members who call Maui home.
KĀKOU connects participants with lifetime access to first-time homebuyer classes, one-on-one coaching, and post-purchase guidance. It helps them prepare not only to buy but also to succeed as homeowners, building financial confidence and stability that can last for generations.
Since its founding in 2003, HHOC has guided more than 6,000 people across the state through the homebuying process, with 65% of participants going on to purchase their first home. For RAM, bringing this proven model to Maui is an investment in our island’s future.
Many first-time buyers discover they are far closer to qualifying than they ever imagined. What they need most isn’t luck. It’s information, a plan and a partner.
Programs like KĀKOU don’t solve Maui’s housing shortage, but they chip away at one of the biggest barriers: uncertainty. KĀKOU can turn hesitation into hope, and hope into action. And when more of our neighbors find stability and stay, Maui becomes stronger for everyone.
