The Maui County Department of Agriculture is urging ranchers, farmers and other producers to complete preparations for Tropical Storm Lala, which is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane before affecting Hawaii Island as early as Saturday. The storm could bring dangerous winds, heavy rain, flooding and large waves to Hawaii Island, Maui County and other islands this weekend. Native Hawaiian taro farmer Ed Wendt said he’s against a proposal to allow a private entity to obtain a license for East Maui water — a proposal that is going before the state Board of Land and Natural Resources on Friday. “Water is a public trust resource and it is highly inappropriate to allow a private, much less foreign, for-profit corporation to control any part of it,” said Wendt, who grows taro in Wailuanui.
