U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda has introduced a congressional resolution commemorating the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the first Filipino immigrants to Hawaii. The resolution honors the 15 Filipino plantation workers, known as Sakadas, who arrived in Hawaii in 1906 and helped shape the islands’ economy, labor movement and culture. Tokuda said the measure recognizes the sacrifices and contributions of the Sakadas, who endured harsh working conditions and discrimination while helping build Hawaii's sugar and pineapple industries. The University of Hawaii has expanded its Hoapili Teacher Pathways program statewide after the initiative helped more than 60 students transition into teacher licensure and education careers since launching at UH Maui College in 2023. The program, now available across all 10 University of Hawaii campuses, offers tuition-free online courses, flexible enrollment options and support services for aspiring elementary school teachers. Gov. Josh Green has signed an emergency proclamation authorizing the Hawaii National Guard to activate Operation Hoʻopauahi, a statewide wildfire response program running through Nov. 30. The initiative keeps three military helicopters ready to assist county and state firefighters with aerial firefighting missions. A CH-47F Chinook and an HH-60 Blackhawk will be stationed on Oahu, while a second Blackhawk will be based in Hilo.
