The Haleakala Visitor Center at 10,000 feet elevation will reopen at 8 a.m. May 21. The national park’s visitor center at the summit of Haleakala was closed for repairs and improvements to the building in February. The visitor’s center will reopen with temporary exhibits and store merchandise.
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has launched a disaster assistance program that will provide more than $1 million in financial aid to eligible Native Hawaiian families impacted by the March kona low storms. Applications are open for the OHA March 2026 Kona Low General Disaster Assistance Program and will be administered by the Hawaiian Council. Seventh grade student Veronna Jhen M. Santiago from Maui Waena Intermediate School has been awarded the Maui County grand prize in the 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry Awards.
