County urges hurricane preparedness as season begins

Maui County officials are urging residents and visitors to prepare for hurricane season, which runs through Nov. 30. The National Weather Service is forecasting an above-normal season in the Central Pacific basin, including Hawaii, with a 70% chance of above-normal activity. Forecasters expect between five and 13 tropical cyclones, including tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes. Energy bill assistance applications open for Maui residents

Maui County residents who need help paying their electric bills can apply for assistance through the Hawaii Home Energy Assistance Program during the month of June. According to Hawaiian Electric, the program provides a one-time credit to eligible lower-income households to help offset energy costs. Applications for the annual energy credit program will be accepted through June 30. On Maui, applications are processed by Maui Economic Opportunity.
