Road repair work in Makawao appreciated

During the County Council’s fiscal year 2020 budget deliberations, I requested repaving of Makawao Avenue as one of my budget priorities. However, when advised that the project cost reached $7.7 million and that it could qualify for federal aid, I adjusted my request. Accordingly, I requested that the council submit a request to the Maui Planning Organization to list and prioritize Makawao Avenue on the State Transportation Improvement Program for reconstruction and consideration of federal funding for the project. Fortunately, the council obliged.

The condition of Makawao Avenue has seriously deteriorated over the years, especially during this year’s heavy rains, so attention to the road was necessary for public and vehicular safety.

Accordingly, the department’s decision to provide interim hot mix asphalt to maintain road safety until the road can be properly repaved or reconstructed is appreciated. I am grateful that the Department of Public Works heard my concerns during the budget deliberations and have acted accordingly to expedite road repairs.

Therefore, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the director and the Department of Public Works for listening and addressing my road safety concerns, especially along Makawao Avenue.
