I’m writing to support fair treatment of The Maui News employees who are trying to negotiate a new contract.

I’ve relied on the newspaper to keep me informed about our community and hold our government officials accountable.

A paper that wants to continue to uphold its high standards of journalism must treat its employees fairly. Management must offer decent wages and better benefits to allow workers to continue their excellent work.

I urge the management of The Maui News to recognize the importance of treating its employees fairly, and to act accordingly. Employees must have a contract that will sustain them and their families.

It’s the only way the newspaper’s long history and journalistic tradition will continue.
