More worried about covering the spread

As I watched Gonzaga play Arkansas Pine Bluff in a basketball game last night, I could not figure out why the coach called time out with three minutes on the clock. The score was 102 to 65; Gonzaga was ahead by almost 40 points. It would have been impossible for Pine Bluff to score 40 points in three minutes. They only scored 65 points all game. Then Gonzaga fouls with three minutes in the game. The line on the game was 35 points in favor of Gonzaga. In my opinion, the coach was more worried about covering the spread than winning the game. Less than two minutes and Gonzaga ...

Computer search finally yields results on county bill

I’m really interested in this Bill 131 regarding property taxes and housing fire victims. It’s a shame all the news coverage does not provide a link to the text of the bill. I’m literally on the Maui County Council’s horribly designed website searching “Bill 131” and cannot find it, nor does a Google search yield results. The most basic way to decide something is to first read what we’re deciding on. Please, Maui News, provide a public service by referencing where residents can actually read this bill. I did finally find the bill, but it took a lot of logging in ...

Earned abundance, comfort, an extravagant lifestyle?

Only from higher planes, or more illumined consciousnesses, can it be seen how a crime expands in its effect, once committed. Forgetting for the moment the waves that radiate or emanate from the premeditated crime itself, the unbalance caused by crime against one’s conscience or ever-aware heart result in a series of resets to restore equilibrium or what we might call karma. To the ignorant. karma seems to mean punishment, but that is a very limited view. To others, karma seems to be unfair, because they do not understand that one may have one soul, but many lives. One soul, ...

Traumatized and scared, fireworks do not help

I know I am not the only one who is sick and tired of the fireworks going off every single night. During our neighborhood potluck for Thanksgiving Day, it was a major topic of discussion. We are all triggered by it, not only because of the potential fire hazard and the fact that some sound like bombs, but also because our yards have been extremely dry. Furthermore, it bothers me a lot because working within mental health, I know there are veterans who must mentally prepare themselves before certain holidays because loud explosions cause PTSD. We have been instructed not to ...

Televise Trump trial to eliminate bias

A Quinnipiac University poll found that an overwhelming majority of Americans, 71 percent, want television in the courtroom for the federal trial of former President Trump on charges of attempting to overturn the 2020 election. It’s not surprising, given the trial could be the most consequential in U.S. history; indeed a majority of Americans believe the charges are “very serious.” Given the strong public interest in viewing the trial first-hand, it’s disappointing that a federal court rule-making advisory committee determined it has no authority to waive Rule 53 that ...

Thanks for covering restaurant closings

Thank you for covering Health Department restaurant closings. I particularly appreciate the details of why the restaurant received a red card and a picture to illustrate the violations. You are the first newspaper that I’ve seen keeping it this real. Journalism is truly public service. Rebecca Sharad Haiku
