Letter: Guest editorial revealed columnist for what she is

Froma Harrop is a wolf in FOX's clothing. She showed why in an “Opinion” op-ed that appeared in The Maui News lead editorial spot July 15-26. At this time in the degradation of one of the noblest democratic experiments in the history of the world, do you want to vaunt her Evil Leader direct adulation? With appreciation though for what you do to inform us of much else. Judy EagleWailuku

Letter: We can do better fixing South Kihei Road damage

Well, it's been four plus months and South Kihei Road’s sinkhole is still not completely repaired and the road opened to through traffic. Here is something to think about. The Alaska Highway was built across more than 1,500 miles of wilderness in eight months. And, by the way, that was back in 1942. Bill Bradley is a former professional basketball player. In the NBA for 10 seasons with the New York Knicks, he also served as a United States Senator from New Jersey from 1979 to 1997. He once wrote a book entitled “We can all do better.” I believe some of his visions would ...

Letter: Mayor should address attack by local youths

The attack at Kaanapali by local youths on visitors to our island has not been addressed by Mayor Richard Bissen and this is his responsibility. Where is he when something like this happens? Tourism is responsible for billions of dollars pouring into our state every year, which supports our institutions and infrastructure and provides many jobs for locals. His silence is questionable and will be remembered next election time. What we need is a leader, not someone who hides his head when a controversial happening occurs. Richard SargentLahaina

Letter: Disheartened with paid beach parking spreading

I recently visited my Maui family and was disheartened to see paid parking spreading to the Kamaole Beach parks. For generations, Maui's beaches have represented something increasingly rare in America: a place where residents and visitors alike could access some of the world's most beautiful natural resources without being nickel-and-dimed at every turn. The beach was the beach. It belonged to everyone. Paid parking may seem like a minor administrative change, but it reflects a larger shift that many residents have been warning about for years. Every new fee, app, permit and ...

Letter: Priority oncology patients get timely consultation

As a physician, I read with concern the recent letter describing one Maui County resident’s struggle to access oncology care. While I cannot comment on any individual’s experience, I want our community to know that we understand these concerns and how difficult they can be for patients and families. Over the past year, changes in oncology services across Maui County have significantly reduced local access to cancer care. We understand that a cancer diagnosis — or the uncertainty that can continue after treatment — is challenging enough without worrying about how or where to ...

Letter: Clear, timely information for Waipoli Road closure

Waipoli Road provides access to one of Maui’s most treasured public recreation areas. If the road is unsafe, it should remain closed until it can be repaired. Public safety comes first. However, residents also deserve clear and timely information from the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Simple questions remain unanswered: Who authorized the closure? What specific damage makes the road unsafe? Has an engineering report been completed? Is repair funding in place? Has a contractor been hired? What work remains? Is there even an estimated reopening date? We are ...
