Stop dwelling on what cannot be undone

It’s so disheartening that Hawaiian Electric Company seems to be the main target for lawsuit because of last year’s unfortunate August 8 inferno. I thought settlement has been done. Survivors were compensated enough to purchase new homes and move on. Yet, they’re still being lured to sue. I hope survivors opt common sense. Embarking on lawsuit could dragged on, more of the settlement could end up in lawyers’ pocket. There are good lawyers, but there are also money grubbers. HECO took responsibility and offered justified settlement though was not really their fault. When ...

Matt Thayer’s fine work only bright spot remaining

I have been a loyal subscriber for 22 years. But, as content continues to decline, delivery is only by mail (sometimes not even same day), I cannot justify the expense to continue reading yesterday’s news. Recently, it changed format and only listed some of the former games, and only on the same date as the paper. If you only receive the paper in the afternoon (by mail), you want to know listings for tomorrow. Old listing format showed next day. To top it off today, April 15, the TV sports listing is for Saturday, April 13. Not very helpful. Any proofreaders there? Hope you will ...

Mahalo for publishing our mother’s obituary

I’m not sure who sent in my mom’s obituary (Susan Rawlings), but my sister and I just wanted to say a quick thank you for publishing it. Even 20 years after leaving Maui, it was the only newspaper I saw her read every single day. She would be thrilled. Mahalo. Anuhea Rawlings Suffield

Prolonged darkness can release demons

Many people know have experienced a “dark night of the soul,” either in an extreme form or one of lesser intensity. Even nations appear to pass through periods of great uncertainty, test, trial and loss of confidence. Common signs, symptoms and syndromes accompany this difficult psychological and spiritual transition. First and foremost, a person or nation will sense an absence, withdrawal or loss of grace. A deeply felt sense of wrongdoing, being abandoned for cause; lost or imperiled by pending blowback may occur. A person or nation that feels within a darkly cast shadow, ...

Let Kihei senior lifeguard teach Deep Water Aerobics

For four months, we have written Maui County officials, asking them to resume our Kihei Deep Water class with our Kihei Senior Lifeguard. Last week, we held a protest at a Maui County Council budget meeting and at Kihei Aquatic Pool. The Kihei Senior Lifeguard has taught our class for over 10 years. In February, she resumed all her lifeguard duties and responsibilities, except being allowed to teach our class. The county’s decision to remove all our equipment, including aqua belts and hand weights, has significantly affected our swimmers. These tools were not just equipment, but ...

Parks lack of transparency needs to be called out

The Maui County Parks and Recreation Department is gaslighting The Maui News concerning the status of Adult Deep Water Aerobics class at Kihei Aquatics Center. Everyone knows that this is an ongoing issue between the director, his pool manager, and the head lifeguard, who is the aerobics instructor. Saying that the classes haven’t been canceled isn’t true.  No one is going to volunteer to teach it, because that would be a direct slap in the face to the instructor who built the class from scratch.  We all know the truth despite the fallacy being perpetuated by the county ...
