County must address Upper Main dangers

A letter posted October 2020 expressed hope speeding on Upper Main Street would be addressed. Not so. As a matter of fact, the situation is getting so very much worse. I have lived on this road for over 45 years. It was dangerous way back then. Now the situation has become worse, and I am in fear of people other than my children are going to be injured if not killed. There are two children centers on the road now. IMUA Discovery Center holds events where the parking is on Main Street. Cars must almost scrape the wall to be within the “parking space” so drivers can only get in or ...

Consider Cook pine on ridges of the pali

We need more agricultural groups and developers to consider planting Cook pine trees on the ridges of the pali west side. Could these trees create firebreaks? Reference an older article “The Pine Trees of Lanai” by Gary Arndt. Raliegh Timmins Haiku

We want equipment, aerobics teacher back

Deep Water Aerobics has been on hiatus since December. There has been no communication with the pool community. The county pool director has instituted a new policy that it must be taught by a volunteer? No transparency, no change in the lifeguard’s job description. It is a disservice to the community to end this program. The numbers of attendees per month range from 200 to 650, for a class three hours a week. The benefits of the class have been touted in several letters. Maintaining one’s health, increased flexibility, feelings of overall wellbeing. Why are the pool patrons ...

Folks that keep vehicles current feel like chumps

I’ve commented on this before, but here I am again. There seems to be a rising trend of vehicles on the roads with expired registration and safety checks, often by a matter of years. Just yesterday, I walked by two parked next to each other on a public street. Each time I go out for normal errands, I don’t get far before seeing more expired vehicles with registration. This seems to be a universal problem in the U.S. and we are no exception. This trend makes us folks that keep our vehicles (and insurance) current feel like chumps for spending the dollars to do so. Can Maui ...

Writer meant makai, not mauka in her letter

In my recent letter about the stunning Hawaiian woman who appeared at the Haiku Community Association meeting May 2023 warning us all of the impending disasters to hit Maui, I made a critical error in one paragraph.  The word “makai” (towards the sea) should replace “mauka” (towards the mountain). She said she was recently awarded and designated the rightful heir to the lands makai of the Hana Highway, the moku of Hamakuapoko. Her inheritance was recently decided in court, she told us. Thank you for allowing me to make this clarification. Adrienne Poremba Haiku

Update needed for letter on ambulance paramedics

A helpful letter ran several weeks ago about the need for ambulances to have at least one paramedic on board, as usual. They are trained in triage and immediate lifesaving, said the letter. Thus, vital medications can be started at once. What is the status? The article concluded that DOH must be accountable, with lawmakers and government officials at fault. That is reasonable, it appears. Many young people, along with tens of thousands of others, obviously need quick medical care on emergency vehicles which meets the usual standard. That cost of calling for such help in an ...
