Calibuso-Kwee, Guzman in mix at state golf

Baldwin High School’s Lana Calibuso-Kwee and Maui High’s Reese Guzman were within striking distance of the leaders after the first day of the HHSAA/David S. Ishii Foundation Girls Golf State Championship at the Waikoloa Kings Course on the Big Island on Tuesday.
Calibuso-Kwee, the reigning Maui Interscholastic League champion, fired an opening-round 1-over-par 73 to stand alone in fourth, one shot behind leaders Leia Chung of Leilehua, Tagirilani Luafalealo of Moanalua and Kailey Oki of Waiakea.
Guzman, a two-time MIL champion and two-time state runner-up, was another stroke back after shooting 74. Mid-Pacific’s Myah McDonald was also tied for fifth.
In the team competition, MIL champion Baldwin was tied for fourth at 29-over 245, 22 shots behind leader Waiakea. Seabury Hall was ninth at 275.
The second and final round is today. The boys championship is set for Thursday and Friday.
