Freshman Rex Riecke put home a header off a free kick with a minute left in the first overtime to send the King Kekaulike High School boys soccer team to its first state final, giving the Maui Interscholastic League finalists in both the Division I and Division II levels.

Riecke’s golden goal beat Kalani 1-0 in the last semifinal of the Division I Niu Health Urgent Care/HHSAA state tournament — the match was played at Radford High School on Friday night.

Riecke’s dramatic game winner came on a beautiful free kick from the left side by Bailey Hofmann.

King Kekaulike (9-1-2) will face Hilo for the D-I state crown tonight at 7 in a match that will be televised on OC16.

Earlier in the day, James Haynes scored all three goals for Seabury Hall in a 3-1 win over Hawaii Prep at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex to send the Spartans to their first state boys soccer championship match in school history.

After HPA’s Aidan Santos scored the first goal in the sixth minute, Haynes tied the match one minute later. Haynes added the go-ahead goal three minutes before halftime and made it 3-1 in the 47th minute.

Seabury Hall (7-5-0) will face Kamehameha Hawaii, a 2-1 winner over Island School in the semifinals, for the Division II state crown today at 5 p.m. at Radford. The match also be televised on OC16.

King Kekaulike outshot Kalani 6-1 in the first half and had several good chances at the first goal. Na Alii’s Bubba Emmanuel had a stellar chance from inside the penalty box stopped by a diving stop by the Kalani goalkeeper in the 58th minute.

Hugh Ward found Emmanuel for another stellar opportunity in the 62nd minute, but the Kalani defense broke up the play before Emmanuel could get a shot off.

King Kekaulike’s Angus Daniels sent a header over the crossbar in the 72nd minute.

Kalani sent a free kick from 16 yards away over the crossbar in the 74th minute. In the final 10 seconds of regulation, King Kekaulike defender Jai Sternthall blocked a point-blank shot and it ricocheted over the net, sending the match to overtime.

King Kekaulike outshot Kalani 9-6 in regulation time.
