LAHAINA — Wailuku resident Andrew Layman enjoyed his first-ever experience racing through historical Lahaina Town.

During the 21st annual Front Street Mile and 5K/10K on Saturday morning, Layman crossed the finish line with a time of 5 minutes, 10.1 seconds to win the combined open and masters division.

“Today was a good race, it was a very fast race,” Layman said. “We had some guys that went out very quick in the beginning and I just tried to hang on to them as much as I could and just kind of saved up for a kick and was able to get it done there at the end.”

Both his sons, 7-year-old Hudson and 10-year-old Jason, also ran in their respective age groups that morning.

The trio had been training together at the Yamamoto Track & Field Facility to prepare for the mile course.

“As we get older, most of us are switching to 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathon — I’m a half marathon guy, so this was a very fast race,” Andrew Layman said with a smile. “I did go over to the track with the boys and do some speed work with them beforehand, but it was definitely a short race.”

An officer in the U.S. Space Force, Layman and his family re-stationed to Maui’s base in May 2021 for an assignment.

“It’s been incredible, we love it,” he said. “It’s awesome, I love races here on Maui. It’s nice for us to not have to travel and for us to be able to do races like this.”

Running has also been a “great way” to stay in shape for the military, he added.

“It’s always a lot of fun to do local races where we move to,” he said.

The top female finisher was 12-year-old Keilana Maldonado, who clocked in at 5:40.3.

Front Street was lined with spectators, cheering as keiki of all age groups raced the 1-mile course that started in front of Tommy Bahama Restaurant and Bar, went down to the Banyan Tree, and back.

Earlier that morning, the 10- and 5-kilometer races took off and finished from the same start line.

Those races were followed by the mile, which began with keiki divisions and went up to the masters age group.

“It was really exciting, and like, this was my first time winning, so I felt a lot of relief that I finished it and it was really fun and it went really fast,” said Aspen Carver after winning the girls 13-14 mile with a time of 6:00.6. “It was accomplishing something with my whole team.”

Moments later, in the boys 13-14 division, Cash Driftmier was charging to the finish with Cason Brooke close behind. Driftmier won in 5:19.0, just a second in front of Brooke.

“I think I did good,” Driftmier said.

Driftmier said he sat in fourth place coming off the half-mile turn around, but surged ahead to the front of the pack thereafter. With about 80 meters left, he “full sprinted” one last time to take the lead into the finishing chute.

“I was going into (the race) thinking I was going for first, I try to get first, like, all the time,” said the Seabury Hall eighth grader, who plans to play football and basketball in high school. “It’s flat, so it’s a lot easier. All the different courses are different terrain, but it’s nice not having the hills, just going out straight and coming back.”
