NAPILI — The Seabury Hall girls volleyball team brought energy onto the court Friday night.

In front of their roaring fans inside the Bozich Center on the Maui Prep campus, the Spartans blasted past Lanai 25-9, 25-11, 25-13 in the Maui Interscholastic League Division II tournament final to take home the championship.

This makes 10 titles over the past 11 seasons for Seabury — the school has won the past five straight MIL championships.

“It feels great and I’m very, very proud of my girls. We’ve come a long way and it just feels great,” said senior outside hitter Kekua Richards, who led the Spartans (14-0) with 12 kills and six aces. “I wouldn’t choose any other team to be with.”

Seabury senior Caelyn Hasegawa had 25 assists, six digs and three blocks. Makalani Carey added seven kills and four aces, Caroline Belew added three kills, three aces and four blocks, and Sofia Connor had five kills. Harmony Powers made 16 digs.

“It feels amazing. We got a taste of victory last year and ever since then, the returning juniors and seniors have been hungry for it,” Hasegawa said after taking celebratory photos with her teammates. “And just being back in the gym just has been amazing for everyone. Everyone has worked so incredibly hard and I just have so much respect for this team.”

Spartans coach Brian Connor said his players put in a lot of hard work “day by day, hour after hour” to earn the crown.

“When we started the season, our goal was to win this and go to states,” Connor said. “We always had that focus, we always had that determination to work hard, so this, for us, is one step in the process.”

MIL runner-up Lanai (10-4) beat Hana in four sets in the semifinals the night before to secure the second spot into the state tournament — the Pine Lasses will be making their first state appearance since 1999.

The feeling of being back in the tournament remains surreal, Pine Lasses coach Ross Morita said.

“From where we started to now, I’m super happy with how everything ended up,” Morita said. “Seabury is always tall, tough. They’re a solid team every single year, so it’s really hard to get on top of that mountain top.”

The main concern now heading into the state tournament on Oahu is finding housing, he said, as the team fundraises to pay for accommodations.

“But, as far as our approach, it’s just not to be happy and satisfied that we’re just there, but to compete and hopefully come out on top in a game or two and see how it goes,” he said.

On Friday night in Napili, the Spartans came out strong, taking a 22-9 lead in the first set. Richards and Belew put down a kill before Richards came back and spiked the ball to quickly end the set.

In the second frame, the Spartans were up 6-3 until they went on a big 12-0 run that included five aces by Richards, two kills and a block by Christina Naish, and a kill by Makalani Carey.

Richards said she wasn’t expecting to find the floor that frequently during that run from behind the service line.

“Yeah that was crazy,” she said.

A few service errors by both teams and an ace by Lanai senior Jayah Vila and a kill by Souina Seiuli brought the Pine Lasses within 19-7.

Kills by Seiuli and Haley Ostrander and an ace from Kawehi Fernandez-Lastimosa helped Lanai hang on, 21-10, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap before a few service errors and a Richards dink ended the set.

A kill by Hasegawa spurred a 7-0 Seabury run to start the final set, which also included four aces by Carey. The Spartans later went on a 6-0 run to open a 23-11 lead, and the match ended on a big block by senior Hannah Drood.

Lanai did not take stats Friday night.

Looking ahead, Connor said his squad is aware of the “quality teams” lined up for next week’s D-II state tournament, the bracket for which was released by the HHSAA late Friday night.

Lanai plays Hawaii Prep in a first-round match at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Kalani — the winner advances to a quarterfinal against top-seeded La Jardin. Seabury is seeded No. 3 and will take on either Damien or Ka’u in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal on Wednesday at Saint Louis.

“The Oahu teams always bring it. Last year we lost in the first round against a great team, Le Jardin,” Connor said. “Oahu teams just play a faster, quicker, well-executed game that we have to prepare for, so an extra practice on Sunday, and then Monday, Tuesday, and then on the flight Wednesday.”

Captains Hasegawa and Richards both said that the Spartans have been working toward states since the preseason.

“Everyone is excited to be there and we’re ready to play against the best teams in Hawaii,” Hasegawa said.

“The captains this year, they’ve been great leaders, been good role models, lead by example, push hard day after day,” Connor said. “I know the whole team wants it, but those two in particular.”
