State baseball: Bears beat Mules 8-2, into D-I state semifinals

Kamehameha Maui falls short against KS Kapalama, 4-1

The Baldwin High School baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA state tournament for the 21st time with an 8-2 win over Leilehua on Wednesday at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu.

The second-seeded Bears (13-2) will be seeking their 12th state championship game appearance when they take on Mililani today at 4 p.m. Mililani beat third-seeded and defending champion Waiakea 2-1 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Maui Interscholastic League runner-up Kamehameha Maui was knocked into the consolation bracket with a 4-1 loss to top-seeded Kamehameha Kapalama in the final game of the night.

BYU signee Kuhio Aloy led the Bears at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance that included two doubles, a run and two RBIs. Kaden Anderson and Christian Dominno were each 2 for 3 for the Bears — Anderson scored twice and Dominno knocked in four.

After Baldwin pitcher Kade Fujioka gave up a run in the top of the first inning, the Bears exploded for four runs in the bottom of the first — Aloy had a two-run double and Dominno had a two-run single in the burst.

After the Mules climbed within 4-2 with a run in the top of the fourth inning, the Bears pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the fifth — Jaren Pascual had an RBI single and Dominno added a two-run single moments later.

The Maui Warriors were limited to two hits, both by Kamole Gilliland, and did not score until the top of the seventh when they plated a run on an error.

Kamehameha Maui (9-7) will play Hilo in a fifth-place semifinal today at 3:30 p.m. at Moanalua.

Kaimi Kahalekai came on in relief for the Maui Warriors and allowed just two hits and one unearned run in three innings in which he struck out seven and walked three.

In Division II play at Radford, MIL champion Molokai was sent to the consolation bracket with a 7-2 loss to Damien. The Farmers outhit the Monarchs 6-4, but three Molokai pitchers accounted for eight walks.

Miken Loo was 3 for 4 at the plate for Molokai (12-3) — the Farmers will play Konawaena in a fifth-place semifinal at noon today at Radford.
