PUKALANI — Makana Kamaka-Brayce has grown up as the quarterback for the Kamehameha Schools Maui football team.

On Friday night, the third-year starter became the all-time passing yardage leader for the school after he finished 18 for 22 for 289 yards and three long touchdown passes to Dylan Schnitzer in a 42-7 win over Maui High at Kanaiaupuni Stadium.

The Warriors improved to 5-0 over in Maui Interscholastic League play, still 1-0 in their Division II battle for a state berth with King Kekaulike.

Kamaka-Brayce, a senior who was The Maui News MIL Offensive Player of the Year in 2021, is now 69-for-97 passing this season for 15 touchdowns, one interception and 1,020 yards.

“It’s awesome, I mean I didn’t even know I was anywhere close to that, but that’s a pretty amazing feeling, I’m kind of speechless right now,” Kamaka-Brayce said after being told of his feat.

Schnitzer finished with five catches for 173 yards and three scores.

“I mean, Dylan did his thing tonight,” Kamaka-Brayce said. “Yards after the catch, he did his thing tonight.”

Freshman running back Kaikea Hueu rumbled 19 yards up the middle to push the Warriors’ lead to 27-7 with 8 minutes, 43 seconds left in the third quarter. Hueu ran five times on the drive for 48 yards.

After stopping the Sabers on downs, Kamaka-Brayce hit Schnitzer in the flat and the senior flanker evaded three would-be tacklers near the sideline and took the ball 66 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 34-7 with 4:56 left in the third.

Hueu, who finished with 140 yards on 21 carries, scored for the third time, on a 17-yard run with 11:47 to play, to make it 42-7 and turn on the mercy-rule running clock.

The third long touchdown for Schnitzer moved Kamaka-Brayce to the top of the school’s all-time passing yardage list.

Kamaka-Brayce passed Kainoa Sanchez, who played at KSM from 2014-17, as the school’s all-time passing leader. Sanchez had 4,161 yards in the air and Kamaka-Brayce now has 4,175 in his three-year career that has at least three more games in it.

The Warriors took a 21-7 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Schnitzer hauled in touchdown passes of 42 and 46 yards in the first half, the first one coming just 2:26 into the game.

Kamalei Cua recovered a Maui High fumble to give the Warriors the ball on their own 38-yard line — four plays later Schnitzer caught the TD pass from Kamaka-Brayce. Two plays before the score, Kamaka-Brayce hit Teiva Kauhaa-Po on a 25-yard pass play.

After another fumble by the Sabers on their next possession, Kamehameha Maui went 59 yards in nine plays — the final five plays were all runs by Hueu for 19 total yards, the final 1-yard dive coming with 2:05 left in the first quarter.

The Warriors pushed the lead to 21-0 on a 46-yard scoring pass from Kamaka-Brayce to Schnitzer with 7:24 left in the first half.

The Sabers struck back quickly on a three-play, 48-yard drive capped by a 44-yard scoring strike from Nash Vida Ah Loo to Braden Albrecht to make it 21-7.

Kamaka-Brayce completed 14 straight passes at one point in the first half.

“We did what we were supposed to do, you know what I’m saying?” Kamehameha Maui coach Ulima Afoa said. “I know I’m becoming kind of a boring interview for you, but you know we do tell our kids every week, ‘Hey look, just because this happened a couple weeks ago or a month ago that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen again. In fact, it’s probably not just because they have memories, too.’

“We’re 5-0, but we take it one week at a time and we’re fortunate to be in the position that we’re in. Yeah, we’re fortunate, but it came because our kids are working hard.”

Maui High stands atop the MIL D-I standings at 1-0, but is 1-4 overall with a game against Lahainaluna next Saturday.

“They’re really physical up front, they use the run really well to set up their passing,” Maui High coach Aylett Wallwork said of the Warriors. “They’re good.”

Wallwork said his team has work to do.

“We had a lot of guys out, but we had some guys that stepped up that never had the opportunity to do it — they had the opportunity today and they actually stepped up,” Wallwork said. “We have got to fix a lot of stuff.”
