Bail kept at $27K for Banana Bungalow thefts

WAILUKU — A judge kept bail at $27,000 for a man who was arrested for burglaries and thefts at a Wailuku hostel after he was released on supervision in another case.

Chad Kaohu, 19, of Wailuku had asked to have his bail amount lowered or to be released on supervision, saying he could stay with his father.

The prosecution opposed the request.

Although Kaohu has no prior criminal convictions, he is charged with committing five burglaries at Banana Bungalow and stealing from vehicles of people staying there, said Deputy Prosecutor Annalisa Bernard Lee.

She said Kaohu allegedly was “going into bedrooms where people were asleep in their beds.”

“The state feels his drug use causes him to be a danger to our community,” Bernard Lee said.

Kaohu has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, three counts of second-degree theft, five counts of first-degree burglary, three counts of credit card theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, six counts of fourth-degree theft and fourth-degree criminal property damage.

The crimes occurred from Jan. 4 to Feb. 6, according to a complaint against him.

In keeping bail at $27,000, 2nd Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo on Friday noted that Kaohu was arrested for the crimes while he had been released on supervision in another case.

“Another courtroom gave him an opportunity at supervised release and new offenses were committed,” she said.

Court records show he was released on supervision Dec. 19 after being charged with second-degree theft in a pending case.

A March 11 pretrial conference is set for Kaohu.

Starting at $4.62/week.
