Upcountry history set at Kula meeting

History of Upcountry with author and former Maui News reporter and editor Jill Engledow and former Kula Hospital physician Dr. Jack Lewin will be presented from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Kula Community Association meeting.

Lewin would later become state director of health. Engledow has written numerous books about Maui, including “Historic Upcountry” and ” Haleakala: A History of the Maui Mountain.” Engledow will be telling the story of Haleakala and its history in a PowerPoint presentation.

Pastor Heather Mueller, a founding member of the Kula Community Association, will describe the early history of the association as it struggled with controversies over the future direction of Kula Hospital.

There also will be a display of the proposed new Kula Park playground structure, presented by Michael Silva, vice president of Fukumoto Engineering.

And the association board is seeking community input on Kula needs for inclusion in the upcoming county budget. The association is preparing testimony on the community’s priorities for the County Council Budget Committee.
