Every defending champion got through the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the Maui Interscholastic League individual tennis championships Friday at Lahaina Civic Center.

While singles divisions played out according to seeds, there was some shakeup and scares in doubles play.

In girls doubles, the defending champion and top-seeded team of Kayleen Lau and Kaelyn Kato of Kamehameha Schools Maui got all they could handle from Maui High’s Erica Gumboc and Jenna Payba before pulling out a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 quarterfinal victory.

The Warriors pair had an easier time in the semifinals, defeating teammates Berylin Lau and Leeana Kanemitsu 6-0, 6-0 to make today’s final against second-seeded Chiemi Powell and Jessica Griffiths of Seabury Hall.

The top-seeded boys doubles team of Devon Baldwin and Zack Fernando withdrew from the tournament, giving King Kekaulike’s Ryan Siarot and Preston Ito a spot in the semifinals. There, they lost to Baldwin’s Cody Sears and Nicolas Wittenburg.

The Bears duo, seeded third, will take on the Spartans’ second-seeded team of Zack Walker and Sterling Sandler in today’s final. Walker is going for his third straight MIL doubles title, each with a different partner.

Kihei Charter juniors Hobbes Wilstead and Jessalyn Lopez both continued their marches back to the finals with straight-set victories.

Wilstead, the defending MIL boys champion, defeated Seabury’s Evan Lipetz 6-0, 6-1 before dispatching the Spartans’ Miles Stone 6-2, 6-2 — Stone won last year’s doubles title with Walker.

Wilstead will face teammate Quinn Shapiro in the final.

Two-time defending girls champion Lopez posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Maui High’s Hana Yoshikawa and a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Sabers’ Hoohie­okala Luna-Beamer to set up a finals showdown with Seabury’s Nikki Fernando.

Lopez has beaten Fernando twice this season, though it was far from easy — she won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the first meeting and 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) in the second.
