We lost our local paper months ago

Last Friday’s front page on the digital revamping of The Maui News had the publisher of The Maui News attempting to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Our local news coverage was taken from us many months ago with the departure of the excellent, prize-winning journalists who diligently covered local and statewide events. For months now, we have had no coverage of the deliberations and activities of the county council or the mayor’s administration. Budget season is all but over and The Maui News carried not a single, in-depth article about the process and content of the ...

Reader skeptical of plan to digitalize

You might as well fold up shop now, because your plan to go “digital” except for Thursdays is going to be an abject failure. Goodbye. Steve Hashira Kihei

Support House Bill 2653 to do away with estate tax

My wife and I opened our family business 44 years ago. Hawaiian Carpet One, Hawaiian Ceramic Tile is still operating in Kahului. Someday I hope to pass the business to the next generation of my family. I support House Bill 2653 because family-owned companies like ours are struggling to stay in business in Hawaii. No inventory to find for those still homeless

Three cheers for the acquisition of the Haggai Institute building in Kihei. With its efficiencies and kitchenettes, it represents a perfect solution to a rapidly devolving homeless problem. Legitimate funds are available through MEO, Catholic Charities and others. However, you have to find this elusive inventory of long-term rentals. There is no inventory to find. John O’Connor Kihei

Sports stories contain incorrect times, articles

Your Sports 2day is stating Eastern Standard Times. Before, the times were correct to our Hawai’i time. What happened that it’s not correct? Sports page B2 April 23, 2024. Yankee’s Boone Ejected by Ronald Blum article is same under heading NFL Matt Ryan. Article is a reprint of Blum’s Yankee article. Nothing about NFL Ryan. What’s happening? Is no one checking? We are trying to support our only newspaper in the Maui community and this lack of attention is frustrating. Glenn Ishikawa Makawao

County must address Upper Main dangers

A letter posted October 2020 expressed hope speeding on Upper Main Street would be addressed. Not so. As a matter of fact, the situation is getting so very much worse. I have lived on this road for over 45 years. It was dangerous way back then. Now the situation has become worse, and I am in fear of people other than my children are going to be injured if not killed. There are two children centers on the road now. IMUA Discovery Center holds events where the parking is on Main Street. Cars must almost scrape the wall to be within the “parking space” so drivers can only get in or ...
