The county pool director has instituted a new policy that it must be taught by a volunteer? No transparency, no change in the lifeguard’s job description. It is a disservice to the community to end this program. The numbers of attendees per month range from 200 to 650, for a class three hours a week. I’ve commented on this before, but here I am again. There seems to be a rising trend of vehicles on the roads with expired registration and safety checks, often by a matter of years. Just yesterday, I walked by two parked next to each other on a public street. Each time I go out for normal errands, I don’t get far before seeing more expired vehicles with registration. This seems to be a universal problem in the U.S. and we are no exception. This trend makes us folks that keep our vehicles (and insurance) current feel like chumps for spending the dollars to do so. In my recent letter about the stunning Hawaiian woman who appeared at the Haiku Community Association meeting May 2023 warning us all of the impending disasters to hit Maui, I made a critical error in one paragraph. The word “makai” (towards the sea) should replace “mauka” (towards the mountain). She said she was recently awarded and designated the rightful heir to the lands makai of the Hana Highway, the moku of Hamakuapoko. Her inheritance was recently decided in court, she told us. It’s so disheartening that Hawaiian Electric Company seems to be the main target for lawsuit because of last year’s unfortunate August 8 inferno. I thought settlement has been done. Survivors were compensated enough to purchase new homes and move on. Yet, they’re still being lured to sue. I hope survivors opt common sense. Embarking on lawsuit could dragged on, more of the settlement could end up in lawyers’ pocket. There are good lawyers, but there are also money grubbers. HECO took responsibility and offered justified settlement though was not really their fault. When ...
