Letter: Phone service in Haiku seems to be substandard?

Fifteen months ago, my copper landline began to deteriorate. The phone either presented very loud noises and wavering buzzing, or did not work at all. (I had no other phone line.) On four separate occasions technicians responded to my calls; arrived to survey the situation; advised me that they no longer maintained such lines; but promised to return shortly to switch me to fiber optics. Despite my many calls and promises given, nothing happened. (On at least one occasion, the promised arrival of a technician resulted in my waiting and losing a day's pay. He never called nor ...

Letter: The Hormuz Tar Baby cons ‘Art of Deal’ author

Some say that God created war to teach Americans geography. Few Americans knew anything about Korea, Viet Nam, Afghanistan, Iraq, or even how to find them they on a map, before we went to war there. Now we have the geography of Iran to contend with. And apparently our leaders are not too good with history either – even painful, recent history. How did our last three wars work out? Anything to avoid? It is well known that the Strait of Hormuz is a uniquely narrow water way in the Persian Gulf that that has been used over the centuries to squeeze international trade for profit or ...

Letter: High school grads should consider running for office

Congrats to all the recent high school graduates on Maui. Just to let you know, you don't need a high school degree, or any degree for that matter, to run for county council or any elected office in Hawaii. No scared. Go for it. Paul FasiKula

Letter: Burning so wrong in neighborhood

Did you know that the fire department doesn’t issue or have any control over agriculture burning permits? They are actually issued by the state Department of Health, with basic concerns about smoke. Somehow, this seems so wrong. After all the fires Maui has suffered, my genius neighbors think that burning is the best way to get rid of green waste. Yes, this is an agricultural property of four acres, but also located in a very developed neighborhood. They apparently don’t care about the surrounding neighborhood. Many people have complained to the fire department, but ...

Letter: Very sad time for our country, for all of us

We are witnessing the worst and most successful deception of our time. Political leaders, media outlets, and social media have helped to convince a large percentage of the population to fear diversity more than racism, equality more than misogyny, democracy more than fascism, immigrants more than authoritarians, empathy more than cruelty, and the poor more than corrupt billionaires. It’s a very sad time for our country, for all of us. Lana OuraWailuku

Letter: With fortune, would quit and go fishing

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander makes $71 million a year playing in the National Basketball Association, not including endorsement. That is outrageous how someone playing professional sports can make so much money. It is not uncommon for many athletes to make $50 million a year in all professional sports. LeBron James made a estimated $113 million in the last 12 months, including endorsement. One of the greatest basketball players, Magic Johnson's original contract was $25 million for 25 years. Larry Bird's contract in 1979 was $3.5 million for five years. Roughly about $650,000 a ...
