Harbor soft sweep waste of time, money

On Jan. 18, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources initiated a coordinated sweep through the Kahului Harbor area with the focus on the growing homeless and derelict vehicles spread out throughout the State Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation property. My most recent count was 23 derelict vehicles. A Notice of Violation was posted on Jan. 11 for each documented campsite by state personnel to initiate a clean-up process. Place displaced by fire into brand-new apartments

Why doesn’t Mayor Richard Bissen and Gov. Josh Green temporarily place those displaced by the Lahaina fire into the huge, brand-new apartment housing just completed next to Foodland Kehalani? All those empty units could house many families without forcing anyone to rent their available properties to anyone they don’t want to. Are they afraid of the potential damage that could be inflicted upon their pretty new project? Seems like a simple and fast solution. Contain toxic materials dropped on Kahoolawe

We need new mind sets on many issues here on Maui. One in particular is the temporary housing of toxic materials.  Hello, we have an uninhabited island in front of us. Why not contain the toxic materials in some kind of light metal containers. Where helicopters can drop them on back side of Kaho‘olawe, until a better solution is voted on. Should have put toxins in shipping containers

How sad and unfortunate that our government is choosing lives over money. The American government still giving away billions of dollars to foreign countries while the American Hawaiian people are still suffering from the fires and the aftermath. This hurried nonsense of do it or lose the money is ridiculous. I do understand the need for people to get back to their homes, but at what risk to the overall population? The Federal Emergency Management Agency and all the government crews should have been putting the toxins in shipping containers from the beginning. Like my past ...
