Maui High inducts 6 with school ties to Hall of Honor
Six more alumni or school supporters will be inducted into the Maui High School Hall of Honor on Oct. 19, including A&B Properties Vice President Grant Chun and former District Judge Harriet Holt.
The Maui High School Foundation, which began inducting alumni into the Hall of Honor in 2011, made the announcement Tuesday. The six new members will be honored at the sixth annual Hall of Honor Awards Banquet fundraiser, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Maui Beach Hotel.
The Hall of Honor recognizes individuals with ties to Maui High School, who have made outstanding contributions to the legacy of the school and the school community. The Hall of Honor includes Patsy Mink, Elmer Cravalho, Uluwehi Guerrero, Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui and others.
This year's honorees include:
* Harriet Holt, Class of 1944, the Silversword Heritage Award, presented to an alumni who is distinguished in life and work. Holt
served as a 2nd Circuit District judge, lawyer in private practice and deputy prosecutor.
* Charlotte Boteilho, Class of 1968, Award of Excellence, presented to an alumni who has excelled in his or her field or profession. She had a 35-year career as a public and private school teacher. As a teacher in the English Language Arts Department at Baldwin High for 25 years, Boteilho was known for her coaching and support of the award-winning speech and debate program. She was Hawaii Teacher of the Year in 1999.
* Grant Chun, Class of 1979, Spirit of Maui Award, presented to an alumni who gave back to the community and made a difference in the community. He is vice president at A&B Properties Inc., and current Maui County member on the state Board of Education, and has served as county managing director.
* James Kidoguchi, former band director, Inspiration Award (not necessarily an alumni), presented to a faculty member who went above and beyond and made a difference to the students of the school. He ran the band department from the early 1970s until 1992 and his former students include Guerrero and current Maui High Band Director Kerry Wasano. He took the band to Illinois and Japan, and there is a scholarship in his honor presented annually to band students.
* Drs. Frank Baum and Colleen Inouye, alumni parents and supporters of Maui High, Saber Spirit award, (not necessarily an alumni) presented to an individual or individuals who are unsung heroes of the school, possibly through volunteer efforts. Baum is a practicing pediatrician and Inouye, an OB/GYN who previously served as chief of staff at Maui Memorial Medical Center. They are the parents of a 2003 Maui High graduate and since 2003 have annually awarded scholarships to Maui High School's valedictorians. Nineteen valedictorians have received the Baum-Inouye funded scholarship administered by the Colleen F. Inouye MD and Frank R. Baum MD Foundation.
The cost to attend the banquet is $60 and may be obtained at the website mauihighschoolfoundation.com. Proceeds of the Hall of Honor Banquet benefit the MHS Foundation whose purpose is to promote and foster the development of Maui High School.
* Hall of Honor. Nineteen valedictorians received a scholarship administered by the Colleen F. Inouye MD and Frank R. Baum MD Foundation in the last school year. A story about Inouye and Baum being inducted into the Maui High School Hall of Honor gave an incorrect scholarship total. The story appeared on Page A3 Thursday.
