Dog theft arrest at Humane Society

A woman was arrested after she climbed over a locked Maui Humane Society fence and removed two dogs from kennels Sunday night, according to police.

Shantel Medeiros, 40, who gave no local address, was charged with second-degree burglary and attempted third-degree theft. Her bail was set at $5,000.

Police said Medeiros had removed one dog, Deputy Wigglebottom, from a kennel at the facility on Maui Veterans Highway and was stuck in the locked fenced area of the kennels when she was contacted by police officers responding to an 8:38 p.m. call.

Medeiros then went to another kennel and removed another dog, Honey Boy, and told officers she wanted to take the dogs, police said.

The dogs are valued at $400.
