Bob Robello draws a laugh from Portuguese Association of Maui Vice President Noelani Cabral Hessler as he models an apron from Portugal during Saturday’s annual Festa Portuguesa Maui at Heritage Hall in Paia. Robello and Hessler were staffing a table selling handcrafted items from Portugal, as well as items made by association members. The event celebrating the Portuguese people’s 142 years in Hawaii also featured traditional dance, music, food and educational displays. “It’s good to perpetuate the culture,” Hessler said. “I think it is important to keep the heritage alive because we have a long history here in Hawaii.”

Portuguese Association of Maui President Carlos Hernandez helps member Margo Kaiama dish up a bowl of Portuguese bean soup Saturday. Kaiama, who is set to turn 91 in July, said she is the association’s oldest member.
