Man airlifted from trail due to heat
The Fire Department’s Air One helicopter airlifted a man who was suffering from heat distress from Commando Trail in East Maui to safety Monday, the Fire Department reported.
Air One and Engine 2 from Paia responded to the mountain rescue call at 1:06 p.m. A 55-year-old man was suffering from heat distress and unable to hike out due to the steep and unstable terrain, the Fire Department said in a news release Tuesday.
He was located about 30 minutes from the trailhead and airlifted out to medics, who were waiting at the trailhead, the Fire Department said.
The high temperature was 97 degrees at Kahului Airport on Monday — setting a record for the month and tying the all-time high. The Fire Department issued a reminder for hikers to be in proper physical condition and to be properly equipped.
“Be aware of weather conditions, especially the next week, as the chance of unstable and changing weather conditions increases with the two tropical systems passing through the area,” Fire Department said.
Hikers often are stranded by quickly rising water from rainfall in the mountains above the trail and require rescue by the Fire Department.
