Compost fire being monitored

Fire crews “knocked down” the large compost fire at Maui EKO Systems in Puunene around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, about six hours after it was first reported, a fire official said Monday.

Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said on Monday that EKO personnel will continue to monitor the fire and manage it with their company water tanks and heavy equipment.

Maui EKO Systems uses green waste and biosolids to make compost.

At the time of alarm at 5:48 p.m. Sunday, Engine 10 and Hazmat 10, both from Kahului, along with two MFD tankers and a tanker from county Public Works responded.

Starting at $4.80/week.
