The Maui News
A 20-acre brush fire forced the closure of a portion of Pulehu Road on Sunday, though crews had the blaze contained by 5 p.m., according to the Maui Fire Department.
The fire was reported at 12:56 p.m. in the vicinity of Pulehu Road above the Kahului Airport. An engine, tanker and hazmat unit from Kahului responded, along with engines from Makawao and Kihei, the department’s Air One helicopter and water tankers from Goodfellow Bros. and Mahi Pono.
A portion of Pulehu Road from Hansen Road to just above the Central Maui Landfill was closed for about an hour due to dense smoke and fire near the roadway. No evacuations were ordered.
While the fire was contained at about 5 p.m., the Fire Department said that efforts to extinguish and mop up the fire were ongoing.
A fire investigator was on scene Sunday evening, and the cause is still under investigation.
No damages had been reported as of Sunday evening.
Conditions at the time of the fire were sunny and hot, with northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph.
