Man is accused of breaking through wall

The Maui News

WAILUKU — A Napili man was arrested Tuesday morning after he allegedly tried to break into a neighbor’s residence through a common wall.

Charito Castillo, 37, was charged with first-degree unauthorized entry into a dwelling, first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal property damage and violation of a restraining order.

According to a declaration filed in court to support the charges, the neighbor woke up at about 1 a.m. Tuesday after hearing loud banging on his walls and Castillo yelling. At about 3 a.m., the neighbor reported it sounded like Castillo was yelling from inside a bathroom of the neighbor’s unit and found Castillo ripping a large hole under the bathroom sink, according to the declaration.

Police were called and Castillo was arrested later Tuesday morning.

Castillo caused damage estimated at $5,000 to the wall and fixtures when he reportedly tried to break into the home, Deputy Prosecutor Anthony Herndon said during Castillo’s initial appearance Wednesday in Lahaina District Court convening in Wailuku.

The victim’s 90-year-old father and a minor child were home at the time, Herndon said. He said the family had obtained a restraining order against Castillo. “He’s still trying to have contact and break through the wall,” Herndon said in asking for Castillo’s bail to be increased from $2,000 to $25,000.

Castillo has 11 prior convictions, Herndon said.

Castillo asked to be released on supervision, with Deputy Public Defender William Pannel saying Castillo works and would stay away from the residence.

Judge Kirstin Hamman increased bail to $15,000 and ordered Castillo to have no contact with the victims. He also was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to seek mental health or anger management treatment.

Starting at $4.80/week.
