Man suspected of following lone hikers

Police are investigating two complaints about a suspicious male watching or following lone female hikers in Upcountry forests.

The complaints were made during daylight hours on Feb. 27 and March 4 in the Olinda forest area of the Waihou Spring Trail and the Pine Forest Trail in Makawao.

The first complaint involved a male who could only be described as wearing a black ski mask, camouflage hoodie and camouflage pants.

The second complaint described the male as about 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He also was seen wearing camouflage clothing.

Police said it wasn’t known if the male in the two cases is the same person.

Anyone with information is asked to call Maui Crime Stoppers at 242-6966.

Police are advising people not to hike alone, to have access to a cellphone and to be aware of surroundings. Suspicious activity can be reported to 244-6400 or 911 in an emergency.
