Police made one impaired-driving arrest and issued four citations – two each for driving without a valid license and child passenger restraint violations – while screening 192 vehicles, said police traffic commander Lt. William Hankins. Traffic officers were joined by family members of Hannah Brown, who was 19 when she was killed in a crash caused by a drunken and speeding driver in 2019, as well as the family of 17-year-old Lahainaluna High School graduate Kahiau Hill, who was killed in a crash in Waiehu on May 30.

She and other family members held signs against impaired driving at the checkpoint in memory of her 19-year-old daughter, who was killed in a crash caused by a drunken and speeding driver in 2019. Checkpoints in memory of Hannah Brown were held statewide Wednesday night “because of what this special girl has been able to do in bringing everybody together,” police traffic commander Lt. William Hankins said at a rally before the checkpoint was set up.
