KIRC announces trolling dates for February

The Maui News

Trolling in the waters around Kaho’olawe will be permitted Feb. 11-12 and 25-26, the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission announced Wednesday.

Access to reserve waters within two nautical miles of Kaho’olawe is highly restricted because of unexploded ordnance and protection of marine resources. However, during two scheduled weekends each month, limited trolling is allowed in reserve waters deeper than 180 feet for vessels permitted by the commission. All other fishing, ocean recreation, commercial and other activities are strictly prohibited.

All vessels must register annually with the commission before entering the reserve to troll during designated dates. Registered vessels are required to file a catch report with the commission any time they fish in the reserve whether fish are caught or not. A $25 permitting fee is required for registration.

Permit holders also will be held accountable to prevent any invasive plant or animal species into the reserve. Vessel hulls should be free of any invasive plants or animals.

To register with the commission or for more information, contact Dean Tokishi at (808) 243-5022 or dtokishi@kirc.hawaii.gov, or visit kahoolawe.hawaii.gov to download a registration packet. Registration packets are also available at the Division of Boating and Recreation office at 101 Maalaea Boat Harbor Road.

At this time, required documents and payments can be dropped off in the commission office mailbox and all permits will be mailed back, so applicants are advised to plan accordingly.
