Fire burns 300 acres between Kihei and Maui Raceway Park

Around 300 acres were burned in a brush fire Sunday in between the Maui Raceway Park and the North Kihei Road intersection, according to fire officials.

The cause of the fire is unknown and there was some damage to fence lines, fire officials said.

The fire broke out around 5:18 p.m. Sunday in the brush area on the Kahului-bound side of Maui Veterans Highway.

Crews arrived on the scene to find a rapidly growing fire in dry brush. Personnel worked on fire containment throughout the afternoon and evening.

The fire was declared 100 percent contained at 11:30 p.m.

On Monday, crews continued securing the fire perimeter and putting out hot spots though the day. The fire remained 100 percent contained as of Monday afternoon.

Multiple fire units responded Sunday, including Engine 6 from Kihei, Engine 10 from Kahului, Engine 14 from Wailea, Ladder 14 from Wailea, three MFD tankers, two emergency call back crews, a battalion chief and the Air One helicopter.

MFD also received assistance from Mahi Pono with multiple water tankers.
