Honoapi‘ilani Highway reopens amid brush fire

Maui Fire Department personnel battle a brush fire that flared up near the Honoapi‘ilani Highway in the Ma‘alaea area on Thursday. The highway was closed briefly due to the fire but has since reopened.

Maui Fire responded to a brush fire at about 12:37 p.m. Thursday, and MEMA’s Emergency Operations Center was partially activated at 1:05 p.m.

The fire is mauka of Honoapi’ilani Highway in the Ma’alaea area. The highway has reopened, according to the Maui Fire Department, though emergency personnel are asking people to avoid the area if possible to allow first responders to work.

A size estimate and containment figure were not available as of Thursday afternoon, though there have been no reports of injuries or damages.

No evacuations have been issued, but residents and businesses in the area are encouraged to remain vigilant, as fire behavior can change quickly given the current weather conditions.

Maui Fire is battling the fire with six engines, two mini apparatuses, six tankers, two dozers, three helicopters, MFD personnel and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife personnel.

The Honoapi’ilani Highway at Kuihelani Highway reopened at about 2:05 p.m. Roadways to North and South Kihei are also open.
